ISU- YouTube Clip

This YouTube video “Is all this technology good for our kids” talks about how parents are worried that technology is taking over their children’s mind. It talks about how kids spend their days staring at some kind of screen. It also talks about how kids should have access on technology because it’s the future but they also should not take advantage of it. The thematic connection with The Veldt on this video is that technology has made us lazy and parents are worried about their kids. Technology has made us so lazy that we text and call from room to room in the same house nowadays. Things like Wii and Nintendo have made kids so much lazier that they don’t go outside and play anymore. In the video one of the mothers asks “What happened to playing outside?” no kid now wants to go outside and play because they’re going to miss something on facebook or their favourite TV show. In The Veldt the parents and the kids rely on technology so much that it had made them so lazy that they don’t even get up to get ketchup the dining table makes it appear for them. The second connection is that parents don’t know what goes inside their children’s mind and now they are worried that all this technology is taking over their minds. In the video it talks about how kids should have access to technology because it’s become the future. But some parents don’t limit their kids. For example in The Veldt they just built in the nursery and they completely forget that children could be influenced easily. A child’s mind runs free and is excited to try new things without thinking things through. This video proves that even though technology has been undermining traditional authority/ morality.

This picture basically shows two people texting while the teacher is explaining a lesson in class. The students are hiding their phones because they know what they are doing is wrong so they do not want to get caught. One way this picture shows how technology is undermining technology is that students are being disrespectful towards the teacher. Back in the days students did not even have phones and the ones that did where thought to obey rules. Technology was not that big either back in the days so this was not a problem. Even though the rules and teachers clearly state that you can’t have electrical devices in the school students tend to ignore these and continue on what they are doing. It also undermines morality because what these students are doing is plain rude. First of all you’re in school for your own good to gain knowledge and do something useful with your lives. The teacher gets paid whether the student paid attention or not in the end it becomes the students’ loss. It’s not only in classes but while taking to people or at a social event people text and listen to their iPods. It’s rude and disrespectful that if you are there for that social gathering you should be listening to the people there and not your iPods. This relates to The Veldt because the parents gave their children the benefit of the doubt and they took advantage of it and it’s the same thing with society. We’re given the benefit of the doubt with technology but we find some way to take advantage of it.

ISU- Article

As technology advances, so do the means by which teens can communicate information and pictures to each other. The speed and ease at which they can transmit makes doing so without adequately contemplating the consequences more likely.

Cell phones are now embedded with cameras and have the capability to send pictures to other phones and computers. Mixing these with teenagers, who are sometimes impulsive and lacking in judgment to begin with, invites a host of problems. Cell phones are small and discreet; therefore it’s possible for someone to be photographed without their permission or knowledge. Cell phones are ever present; therefore, no opportunity to snap a photograph is missed. And pictures can be sent to others quickly and en masse.

Sexting and Teens is an article about teenagers and how they are abusing the use of cell phones. Sexting has become as trend to some teenagers in this article Susan Carney explains how it is bad and goes against morals. Since technology has expanded there are cell phones with cameras now and teenagers have been sending sexual pictures and messages to each other. There are lots of risks like using sexting to sexually harass, attention seeking through sexting and the legal issues that come with. This relates to the theme because technology has expanded so much that it now is undermining traditional morality and authority. It undermines traditional authority /morals because teenagers were not raised to such degrading things. One of the specific connections is that in the story and the article its shows those things are done without thinking about the consequences. George and Lydia spoiled their kids and depended on the house not thinking that there could be a day that things could change. In the story David McClean says“Why’d you starve tomorrow if something went wrong in your kitchen “ because they have been relying on technology that they don’t even notice things that have been going around the house let along start cooking. And in the article it says that “Kids who send these pictures don’t think about the kind of message it sends to others about them or what people think of them”. This proves that technology undermines traditional morality because kids sending naked pictures of themselves and parents relying on technology and not thinking about it was not the way we were thought. The next connection is how it undermines authority. The kids in The Veldt got so used to their nursery that they stopped listening to their parents. In the article it says how there have been several charges with child pornography and yet people ignore it and go ahead with it. Basically teenagers and kids don’t like to listen to the bad stuff that technology brings because they are o caught up with the advantages.

ISU- Introduction Paragraph

The Veldt (1950) by Ray Bradbury is about a family that depended on technology for their whole lives. They have been spoiling their children Peter and Wendy all their lives. They live in a house that does everything for them with a built in nursery that turns everything you imagine into reality. This perfect life style turns upside down when the kids and the nursery start changing. Wendy and Peter become disobedient and disrespectful .The scenes in the nursery change from Peter Pan to scenes of lions feasting on a hot burning day in Africa. Running out of options they call their psychologist. He tells them that the children have grown hate for them because they are not getting everything they want anymore. Taking his suggestion on shutting the house down and going for vacation they pack top leave in the morning. With cunning and devious ways Peter and Wendy get their parents insider the nursery and they lock them inside the nursery to feed them to the lions. The theme of this story is technology has the potential to undermine authority/morality. This relates to society because technology has been expanding nowadays and it’s become something we can’t live without. For example in a class when there is a teacher explaining a lesson student would be texting, listening to iPods, on facebook and twitter. Even though the rules clearly state that you are not allowed to have those things in class students don’t listen because having their phone with them seems more important than listening to teachers. The three selected texts that i will be exploring are a movie, image and an article.
